Thailand Announces New Regulation for Alcoholic Beverage Packaging to the WTO

The packaging serving as the container of alcoholic beverages must have a net volume of no less than 175 milliliters per container. The package of alcoholic beverages must clearly indicate the warning statements in Thai as required.

Through WTO notification G/TBT/N/THA/747/Add.1 issued on November 22, 2024, Thailand officially communicated a new regulation governing the packaging and labeling of alcoholic beverages (Notification of the Alcoholic Beverages Control Re: Rules, Procedure and condition, on Packaging including Warning Statement of Alcoholic Beverages Produced or Imported). The regulation, published in the Royal Gazette on November 8 and effective from November 9, 2024, mandates specific warning statements on all alcoholic beverage packaging.

The new regulatory requirements stipulate that the packaging serving as the container of alcoholic beverages must have a net volume of no less than 175 milliliters per container. In addition, the alcoholic beverage packages must clearly display the following warnings in Thai:

1) It is prohibited to sell alcohol to persons under 20 years of age.

2) Drinking alcohol reduces the ability to drive vehicles.

3) Persons under 20 years of age should not drink.

Moreover, the display of warning statement of alcoholic beverage is exempted from the requirements specified in Ministry of Public Health Notification Re Labeling of Prepackaged Food. Please refer to Thailand Alcoholic Drink Regulation for the full compliance details.
