Singapore Proposes Changes to Food Regulations, Involving New Ingredients in Infant Formula and the Expanded Use Scope of Food Additives

On January 31, 2024, Singapore Food Agency (SFA) issued Draft Food (Amendment) Regulations 2024. Major revisions involve extending the use scope of permitted food additives, and allowing the use of new ingredients in infant formula, which is slated to come into effect in Q2 2024. Any feedback can be submitted to toh_kian_han@sfa.gov.sg before March 31, 2024.

Abbott Nutrition Recalls Certain Powdered Infant Formula due to Possible Presence of Cronobacter sakezakii and Salmonella Newport

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating four consumer complaints of infant illness related to powdered infant formula produced from Abbott Nutrition’s Sturgis, Mich., facility. These complaints include three reports of Cronobacter sakazakii infections and one report of Salmonella Newport infection* in infants. “All four cases related to these complaints were hospitalized and Cronobacter may have contributed to a death in one case,” says the U.S. FDA.

Singapore Consults on Food Regulations 2021, the Use of 2’-FL in Infant Formula Involved
May 12, 2021
The use of 2'-fucosyllactose/difucosyllactose (2'-FL/DFL) mixture should not exceed 160 mg/100mL in infant formula targeting at babies not more than six-month-old, and its maximum usage in infant formula designed for babies between six- and twelve-month-old is 120 mg/100mL.
