Overview of Regulatory Updates in EU | April 2022

In April 2022, quite a few regulatory updates happened in EU, including 5 regulations related to the authorization of substances, 5 concerning the amendment to maximum residue levels, specification and condition of the use of substances, 2 r related to epidemiological situation, 2 regarding monitoring plan and 1 related to geographical indications. These regulations shall enter into force on the twentieth day following its publication date in the Official Journal of the European Union, unless otherwise specified.

Food Additives in Japan: Regulatory Requirements & Compliance Tips

Japan rejected 733 batches of non-compliant foods from March 2021 to March 2022. Among them, 15% products failed because of unqualified food additives, involving exceeding limits or scope, failing to meet ingredient specifications, and using the additives that are not allowed to be used.

Japan Rejects 68 Batches of Imported Food in March 2022

According to the latest MHLW notification, 68 batches of food products imported from 23 countries/regions were found non-compliant in March 2022. The major reasons for food rejection in March were the detection of toxic substances, microbial contamination, non-compliant additives and food spoilage.

Japan Proposes to Remove One Food Additive From the Positive List

According to the announcement issued by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) on Apr. 22, 2022, although food additive 3-acetyl-2,5-dimethylfuran has little carcinogenetci effect on humam beings, it proves to be genotoxic carcinogen. Therefore, MHLW announced this additive will be deleted from the list of designated food additives from Dec. 31, 2022.

South Korea to Revise Food Additive Code

MFDS released two notifications for public opinions on the amendments to Food Additive Code. The proposed changes focus on the use limit of Nicotinic Acid, new additives for manufacturing various types of dietary supplements, amino acids applicable for infant foods, and new components of Steviol Glycoside, etc.
