[Updated] South Korea Revises the Food Additive Code

South Korea expands the scope of microorganisms that can be exempted from submitting safety data for new food additive recognition, permits iron oxide to be used in health functional food, newly adds four diluents for mixed preparations, and expands the criteria for using hexane as an oil extraction solvent.

China Unveils 85 New GB Standards, Involving Food Contact Materials, Strains and Food Additives

Of the new standards, 3 pertain to food products, 5 to food manufacturing and operations, 6 to food contact materials and articles, 55 to testing methods and 16 to specification of food additives and nutrition fortification substances.These standards will come into force in 2024.

[Updated] South Korea Streamlines Customs Clearance Policies

Foods that can enjoy the fast customs clearance are expanded to flavorings (which belong to food additives) and semi-finished products. The disposable utensils will be inspected by product materials instead of types. South Korea to allow the electronic sanitary certification of livestock products imported from EU on September 13, 2023. South Korea Implemented the digital inspection for imported foods on September 14, 2023.

China Prioritizes Review and Approval for FSMP for Rare Diseases

According to an official media release on September 12, 2023, State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) plans to revise the Administrative Measures for Registration of Foods for Special Medical Purpose, shortening the review period for urgent clinical needs related to FSMP for rare diseases from 60 to 30 working days, and prioritizing the on-site inspections and sample testing for these FSMP products. Also, SAMR is currently trialing this priority review and approval process.

Philippines Adopts New Dietary Standards for Prepackaged Processed Foods

On September 7, 2023, the Philippines FDA issued FDA Circular No.2023-009, announcing to adopt the 2015 Philippine Dietary Reference Intakes (PDRI) Percent Recommended Energy Intakes/Recommended Nutrient Intakes (%REI/RNI) as the new dietary standard for all prepackaged processed foods. This move repeals Bureau Circular No. 16 s. 2005, which previously adopted the 2002 Recommended Energy and Nutrient Intakes (RENI) as the dietary standard.

Indonesia Updates the List of Prohibited Raw Materials in Processed Food and Prohibited Ingredients as Food Additives

In early September, Indonesia food and drug administration (BPOM) published No. 22 of 2023 on Raw Materials Prohibited in Processed Food and Ingredients Prohibited from Use as Food Additives, as a replacement of BPOM Regulation No. 7 of 2018 on Prohibited Raw Materials in Processed Foods. For locally-produced and imported processed food products, they shall not contain any listed substances. The new regulation came into force on August 15, 2023.
