India amended the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims). EU established a harmonized European Union Single Window Environment for Customs. U.S. amended the standard for yogurt. Canada proposed MRLs for Ipflufenoquin in two food categories. Australia and New Zealand permitted new substances used in food.

[Updated] Japan Revises the Drug/Non-drug List for Food Ingredients
Dec 28, 2022
On December 19, 2022, Japan released an amendment to the Directory Distinguishing Food and Drug Ingredients. According to the amendment, MHLW further enriched the contents of the drug list (ingredients exclusively used as drugs). The changes came into effect on the date of promulgation.

Japan Plans to Revise Rules on Beef Imports

On December 8, 2022, MHLW issued two notices for comments, proposing amendments to the requirement for imported beef. As revealed by notices, beef products from Spain and Austria are exempted from the age restriction. Any comments can be submitted before January 6, 2023.

India issued the draft of the Food Safety and Standards (Genetically Modified Foods) Regulations. EU proposed a revision on Packaging and Waste Directive. The U.S. FDA amended the Color Additive Regulations. Canada amended the Table of Reference Amounts for Food. Australia and New Zealand permitted the use of Alpha-Amylase from the GM Bacillus Licheniformis as processing aid.

Japan Revises the Drug/Non-drug List for Food Ingredients

According to the Latest revision, Japan announced to revise the Directory Distinguishing Food and Drug Ingredients (hereinafter “the Directory”). As revealed by the revision, six ingredients have been newly added into the Directory, two of them can be used as common food ingredients as long as they do not claim medicinal efficacy. Besides, the alias of one ingredient in both lists was revised.

Japan Approves a New Food Additive

On October 26, 2022, MHLW released an amendment to the Ordinance for Enforcement of the Food Sanitation Act, which mainly added Calcium L-Tartrate as a designated additive with its specification and uses standard. This revision is implemented as of the release date on October 26, 2022.

In October of 2022, China proposed to add Ginseng, American Ginseng, and Lingzhi to Health Food Raw Material Directory. South Korea published the modifications in Food Code. Japan revised the Ordinance for Enforcement of the Food Sanitation Act. Indonesia drafted new regulation for processed food registration. Thailand unveiled the exposure drafts of five food regulations. Singapore updated the List of New Farms and Establishments Approved to Export to Singapore. Philippines proposed to revise Guidelines on the Unified Licensing Requirements and Procedures. India mandated the rules for foreign food manufacturing facilities of five food categories to register with FSSAI. EU amended regulation as regards maximum levels of dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs in certain foodstuffs. The U.S. announced to remove the dual labeling requirements for certain packages of meat and poultry products. Canada seeks approval for the use of alpha-cyclodextrin. Australia and New Zealand consulted on the use of alpha-amylase.
