On December 27, 2023, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) of Japan announced six substances as "designated drugs" under the category of "dangerous drugs" with effect from January 6, 2024. The designated drugs include HHCV, HHCB, HHC, HHCH, HHCP, and “HHC-Octyl, HHCjd”.

On November 21, 2023, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) of Japan issued Proposal No. 495230249, involving the Guidelines for Self-inspection and Product Design Regarding the Safety of Food Products in Tablet and Capsule Form (Draft) & Guidelines for Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) of Food Products in Tablet and Capsule Form (Draft). Any comments can be submitted before December 21, 2023.

Japan to Implement New Policy on Food Contact Materials

On November 30, 2023, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) of Japan issued Notification No. 324, officially announcing the Positive List (PL) for food utensils, containers, and packaging from June 1, 2025. Additionally, partial modifications have been made, including elimination, consolidation of substance names, and changes in restrictions, as a result of updating the PL management scope for synthetic resins. These modifications will also come into force on June 1, 2025.

Japan Amends the Specification and Standards for Food and Food Additives

On October 18, 2023, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) of Japan issued the Announcement No. 6, which revised the mineral water standard specified in the Specification and Standards for Food and Food Additives. According to the amendment, the standards for lead content in the following mineral water products have been revised, after a safety review by the Food Safety Commission. These revisions take effect immediately, but there is still a transitional period of 6 months.
