Japan CAA Amends Food Labeling Standard

Japan Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA) recently unveiled Amendment No. 752 for the Food Labeling Standard with immediate effect. According to the amendment, due to the revision of Japan's Specifications and Standards for Food Additives, the labeling names of additives and allergens have been updated accordingly. The revised parts are marked in red.

Japan Expands Food Labeling Scope for Food for Special Dietary Uses

On May 19, 2023, the Consumer Affairs Agency of Japan amended the labeling requirements for Food for Special Dietary Uses (FOSDU)*. According to the amendment, enterprises now can apply for FOSDU labels for oral rehydration solution (ORS) products. The label review criteria are as follows.

Japan Revises Labeling Requirements for Foods for Specified Health Uses

The Consumer Affairs Agency of Japan issued No. 343 notification, stating that contents in Regarding Labeling Permission for Foods for Specified Health Uses were revised. According to the comparative table of the prior and amended article provisions, the application scope of re-permitted FOSHU, the marking requirement for mandatory labeling, and the application documents of FOSHU have been modified. Japan Revises Sake Labeling Standards

On July 19, 2022, National Tax Agency of Japan released an amendment to Sake Manufacturing Method Quality and Labeling Standards, involving mandatory, recommended, and prohibited labeling requirements for sake products. The amendments will become effective on January 1, 2023.

Japan Revises the Labeling Standards for Nutrient Contents and Genetically Modified Foods

On March 30, 2022, the Consumer Affairs Agency, Government of Japan, issued an amendment to Food Labeling Standard. According to the amendment, the labeling requirements for nutrition, genetically modified food, and prohibited terms were revised. Japan Revises Labeling Regulations for Soy Milk Products

On December 22, 2021, the Federation of Fair Trade Conferences and Consumer Affairs Agency jointly issued a statement, which added “additives”, “raw material origin name”, and “amount and calorie of nutritional ingredients” as mandatory labeling items for soy milk products. This statement came into force upon issuance.
