China Halts All Imports of Japanese Aquatic Product over Fukushima Nuclear Water Release

On August 24, 2023, General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) published a notification, announcing to immediately suspend the imports of all aquatic products (including edible aquatic animals) originating from Japan, in order to comprehensively prevent the radioactive contamination risk on food caused by the discharge of nuclear wastewater from Fukushima into the sea.

EU amended regulation on authorized plastic FCMs and use requirements thereof. UK opened the consultation on the draft Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging and Packaging Waste) Regulations 2024. U.S issued standards for vegetable oils. Canada proposed amendment to the List of Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for Veterinary Drugs in Foods. New Zealand passed the Therapeutic Products Bill.

MHLW Implements New Requirements for Two Designated Additives
Aug 03, 2023
On July 26, 2023, Japan MHLW issued an amendment to Specifications and Standards for Food Additives. According to the amendment, Japan added Calcium Phytate as a new designated additive, and revised the scope of application for another designated food additive named Cupric Sulfate. The changes came into effect immediately.

MHLW Proposes to Eliminate 78 Food Additives from the Existing List Based on Sales Conditions

Japan announced to initiate an investigation on 78 existing food additives from List of Existing Food Additives. MHLW believed these 78 food additives are unlikely sold on the market. As of now, 132 additives have been identified in the four previous investigations and have finally been banned for use.

Japan Expands Food Labeling Scope for Food for Special Dietary Uses

On May 19, 2023, the Consumer Affairs Agency of Japan amended the labeling requirements for Food for Special Dietary Uses (FOSDU)*. According to the amendment, enterprises now can apply for FOSDU labels for oral rehydration solution (ORS) products. The label review criteria are as follows.
