On September 8, 2022, China National Health Commission (NHC) opened the proposed draft of GB 2760-2014 Standard for Uses of Food Additives for public comments, along with the drafts of other 17 GB standards regarding food additives. Any comments can be submitted until October 10, 2022 via the National Food Safety Standards Information System.
In China, GB 2760-2014 acts as the most fundamental and significant legislation to regulate and guide the correct use of food additives, whose two revised drafts have been released in 2017 and 2021 respectively. Notably, this latest draft is seeking public comments again for some pending contents after the comments solicitation for the second draft finished, mainly pertaining to the Table A.1 of GB 2760-2014. Major proposed revisions are as follows:
Deletion of restrictions for the use of β-carotene and diacetyl tartar in distilled liquor
As per the current provisions, β-carotene and diacetyl tartar are allowed to be used in the distilled liquor within the limits. However, during the previous public comments solicitation, some distilled liquor enterprises deem there's no need to use these two food additives in distilled liquor due to the improvement of process technique. Thus, NHC proposed to remove the related provisions.
Deletion of restrictions for varieties and the use of Azodicarbonamide
Currently, Azodicarbonamide can be used in wheatmeal as a flour treatment agent with the maximum limit of 0.045 g/kg. This draft deletes related provisions since NHC has learned that there’s no need to use Azodicarbonamide in wheatmeal anymore, thanks to the updated process technique.
Addition of a footnote regarding sugar alcohols to the Table A.1
Sugar alcohol food additives are widely used as a class of sweeteners in food. However, it has been found that excessive intake of sugar alcohols in some people may cause gastrointestinal intolerance and even diarrhea. In order to avoid this, the Codex, EU, US and some other countries require reminders on food labels regarding the use of sugar alcohols as a food additive.
In recent years, sugar alcohol food additives in China are more and more widely used in food as substitutes for sugar. In order to avoid negative effect of sugar alcohols, also to follow the global trend, this revision adds guidance on the use of sugar alcohol food additives, that is, adding a footnote saying "excessive addition of sugar alcohol to food may cause diarrhea of consumers. If the added amount may cause diarrhea risk, consumers should be prompted by the label of the final product".
