Since 2019 more and more enterprises have invested in China’s artificial meat sector. The subject was also heatedly discussed during the “Two Session” meeting this year. Artificial meat mainly includes plant protein meat and cell-culture meat.
Sun Baoguo, an academician of CAE (the Chinese Academy of Engineering), stated that the R&D of cell-culture meat in China is comparatively underdeveloped compared with European and American countries. To facilitate industry development, Sun put forward the following three suggestions [1]:
1. Increase investment in R&D
It should be listed in plans such as “National Key Research and Development Plan of the 14th 5-Year Plan” and “National Mid-And-Long Term Scientific Key Project." The cell-culture meat sector should be given enough policy and financial support.
2. Optimize the supervision and regulation mechanism for cell-culture meat
Sun Baoguo proposed that cell-culture meat could be classified as new food raw material and supervised according to “Administrative Measures of The Safety Review on New Food Raw Materials."
3. Build public awareness
A major goal is to build public awareness on the health and environmental benefits of artificial meats to foster demand and popularize the sector in China. “The GB standard for artificial meat has been included in the legislation program," according to Qiao Xiaoling, chief engineer of China meat product comprehensive research center, “it is expected that the primary standard for plant-based meat will be unveiled in 2-3 years, and the product standards for plant-based minced meat, meatballs, and sausage will be included in future" [2].
