Danone Issues Safety Warning for Nutrilon Infant formula

On 15 Jun, Nutricia announced on its official website that there is a limited quantity of incorrectly labeled Nutrilon Pepti 1 and Pepti 2 (made for children with a cow milk allergy) circulating in the Dutch market. These cans do not contain Pepti but another infant formula product namely Nutrilon Nenatal, which is designed for premature babies and does not go through the special anti-allergenic treatment. Children with a cow milk allergy are at risk of different degrees of allergic reactions such as eczema, digestive problem, respiratory problems and even fatal damage as a result of hypersensitivity reactions. Nutricia advises parents using Pepti 1 and Pepti 2 to directly contact their doctors in all cases of adverse reaction. Meanwhile, Nutricia has also outlined that batches before the following expiry dates are safe to use.

According to Nutricia, the problematic tins of Nutrion Pepti entered the supply chain through irregular channels by an as yet unidentified third party. Nutricia assures that products acquired via regular sales channel, such as pharmacies, home care organizations and the online channels sanctioned by Nutricia and its partners are safe to use. The safety of products can be verified by checking the best before date. The case is currently being investigated by Dutch police. In the meantime Danone is urging consumers to buy Nutrilon through official channels.

The China Effect:

Nutrilon infant formula is popular amongst Chinese parents who purchase through a “Daigou” (a purchasing agent), ask friends or relatives in Holland to bring them back to China or through various shopping websites. With the prevalence of cross-border e-commerce, Nutrilon is available to purchase at almost all popular cross-border websites, such as Tmall Global, Kaola, Shanghai KJD, etc. After the bad news was released, Taobao, Tmall and 1688 under Alibaba and other websites conducted an in house audit on Nutrilon stock. Tins with incorrect labels have been taken off the shelves.
