Chlorinated lime, sodium hypochlorite solution, and chlorine dioxide have been deleted from permitted food additive list.
On May 4, 2016, Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) preannounced the revision of “Standards for Specification, Scope of Application and Limitation of Food Additives”, which deletes chlorinated lime, sodium hypochlorite solution, and chlorine dioxide from the permitted food additive list and their corresponding application scope and limitation. The period for public consultation is 60 days since this announcement was made.
Under the current regulation, chlorinated lime, sodium hypochlorite solution, and chlorine dioxide are allowed to be used as bactericide in drinking water or food grade water, but are prohibited to be added into food directly. Food manufacturers and traders shall conform to “Sanitation Standard for Food Cleansers” when applying sodium hypochlorite solution, and chlorine dioxide as major components for sterilization in food contact surfaces or foods.
