Taiwan to Revise Contaminants and Toxins in Food

On November 13, 2023, Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) released Draft Sanitation Standard for Contaminants and Toxins in Food, involving food categories such as young child formula, infant drinks, offal of poultry and livestock, nut, seeds, and chocolate. The amended contents are proposed to take effect from July 1, 2024. Any feedback can be submitted within 60 days from November 13, 2023.

China to Amend GB Standard General Rules for Food Flavorings (GB 29938)

On November 7, 2023, China Association of Fragrance Flavour and Cosmetic Industries (CAFFCI) opened the consultation of amended GB 29938 General Rules for Food Flavorings for public feedback. The proposed draft mainly aims at modifying the varieties and quality specifications of synthetic flavorings used in food. Comments can be sent to zqyj@cfsa.net.cn before November 20.

US Proposes to Further Eliminate the Use of Brominated Vegetable Oils in Food
Nov 17, 2023
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a proposed rule to revoke the regulation that authorized the use of brominated vegetable oil (BVO) in food. Since its removal from the Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) substances in 1970, the FDA regulates BVO as a food additive. However, a recent research indicates that bromine can bioaccumulate and have toxic effects on the thyroid. FDA no longer concludes that BVO in food is safe.

New Zealand Releases New Maximum Residue Levels for Agricultural Compounds

On November 10, 2023, Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) in New Zealand issued Food Notice: Maximum Residue Levels for Agricultural Compounds, replacing the previous version issued in July. The food notice sets new MRLs for fluoxapiprolin and amends existing MRLs for carbendazim, cyromazine, and fluralaner, which comes into force on November 13, 2023.
