China Consults on 21 GB Food Standards, Involving FCM, Dairy Products and Food Additives

On December 11, 2023, National Health Commission (NHC) announced to seek public comments on 21 national food safety standards, involving food contact materials (FCM), dairy products, testing in Chemistry, Microbiology, and Toxicology, Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) for health food, Good Hygiene Practices (GHP) and food additives. Any comments can be submitted online prior to February 10, 2023.

Indonesia Recognizes Halal Certificates from Nine Foreign Halal Certification Bodies

MRAs were signed between BPJPH and 9 LHLNs in terms of mutual recognition and acceptance of halal certificates, and other MRAs were signed between BPJPH and 28 LHLNs in agreement to accelerate the completion of LHLN assessments for recognition and acceptance of halal certificates.

USDA Releases Proposed Exemptions for Plant Modified Through Genetic Engineering

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) published an Exemption Proposal in the Federal Register, introducing five new types of genetic modifications that plants can possess. These modifications would be exempted from 7 CFR part 340 Movement of Organisms Modified or Produced Through Genetic Engineering (hereinafter "7 CFR part 340"), as they can be achieved through conventional breeding methods. Any comments can be submitted online by December 15, 2023.

New Zealand Releases New Maximum Residue Levels for Agricultural Compounds

On December 1, 2023, Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) of New Zealand issued Maximum Residue Levels for Agricultural Compounds, replacing the previous version issued in November. The food notice amends MRLs for fenpyrazamine, fenpyroximate, fluxapyroxad, mefentrifluconazole and sulfoxaflor, which comes into force on December 4, 2023.
