Philippines Senate Proposes Bill to Ban Added Sugar for Baby Foods

In January of 2024, the Philippines Senate introduced and revealed Senate Bill No. 2518 titled An Act Prohibiting Producers and Manufacturers of Baby Food From Adding Sugar on Their Products, and for Other Purposes, also known as No Added-Sugar on Baby Foods Act. Currently, this new bill has been undergone the first reading and is now pending in the committee.

Singapore Proposes Changes to Food Regulations, Involving New Ingredients in Infant Formula and the Expanded Use Scope of Food Additives

On January 31, 2024, Singapore Food Agency (SFA) issued Draft Food (Amendment) Regulations 2024. Major revisions involve extending the use scope of permitted food additives, and allowing the use of new ingredients in infant formula, which is slated to come into effect in Q2 2024. Any feedback can be submitted to toh_kian_han@sfa.gov.sg before March 31, 2024.

China Customs Rejected 182 Batches of Imported Food in November 2023, Involving Infant Formula and Dairy Products

On December 19, 2023, General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) published the list of non-compliant food products in November 2023. A total of 182 batches of imported food from 33 countries/regions were rejected. Most non-compliant imported food in November came from Japan (26.9%, mostly candy and ice cream), followed by Vietnam (10.4%, mostly fruit and vegetable products) and the U.S. (8.8%, mostly nuts and meat products).

On November 30, 2023, Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) published the amendment to the Regulations Governing the Management of the Review, Registration and Issuance of Permit Documents for Food and Related Products. The amendment takes into effect immediately, except for a one-year grace period granted to provisions related to the original hygiene analysis report.

Canada Proposes to Modernize the Regulations for Foods for Special Dietary Use and Infant Foods

On November 28, 2023, Health Canada announced to seek public comments on a proposal to modernize the regulations for foods for special dietary use (FSDU) and infant foods, which are currently regulated by the Divisions 24 and 25 of the Food and Drug Regulations. Any comments can be sent to bns-bsn@hc-sc.gc.ca until February 6, 2024.
