Products Launched

  1. Nongfu Spring soda drink is available in two flavours: white peach and lemon (price around ¥4). It also introduced a new flavour to Farmer Orchard (product name, 农夫果园) in the medium concentration juice market (fruit juice content 26% to 99%). Farmer Orchard features peach and grape flavours and increased the juice concentration from 30% to 50%.

  1. "Yili Good Yoghurt" official Wechat account (伊利好酸奶) announced three new pasteurized fresh milk products. Currently, China’s pasteurized milk market offers great potential, for more info click here.

  2. Coca-Cola launched a new product, pineapple beer, which contains no alcohol but tastes like beer. This new product will go on sale in Henan province in December.

  3. On Dec. 17, Jinlingguan "Youzi Lamb" (金领冠, Yili) infant formula was officially launched, including stage 1-3. The raw material is 100% pure goat milk.

  1. Nestle introduced "Sharkwich," and comes in three flavours: sweet (cheese & green tea), sour (cheese & tomato), and salty (cheese & steak). Each box contains 12 individual packets and sells for 59.9 yuan. At present, it is on sale in supermarkets and e-commerce channels in many cities.

  1. Be&Cherry (百草味) has once again collaborated with the National Treasure (program name) to create a series of IP gift boxes (nuts) for the 2020 Spring Festival, with the price range of 50-400 yuan.

  2. Wolong combines mixed nuts and cookies to create a product called “nuts planet." At present, the product has been on the market in the Wolong flagship store of Tmall, with a promotional price of 59 yuan. The innovative concept of "nut+" is being applied to product R&D by more and more manufacturers.

  1. Nestle launched a nutritional meal replacement brand, Build U. The energy of its new beverage is as low as 164k calories/bottle, containing more than 14g of casein and more than 7.5g of dietary fibre. Also, it has 13 kinds of vitamins and minerals, as well as raw materials such as enzymatically digested oat powder, red dates, blueberries, sesame seeds, and chia seeds.

Industry Focus

  1. Dec. 6, Tea Summit was held in Beijing, coinciding with the release of the 2019 New Tea Consumption White Paper. According to findings presented in the paper, China's tea market is expected to exceed 400 billion yuan by the end of 2019, twice the size of the coffee market.

  1. On Dec. 27, China Merchandise Reserve Management Centre Co., LTD (MRM), organized the release of 20,000 tons of frozen pork from the central reserve.

  2. China's first enzyme industry report was released. According to the report, the market size of China's enzyme industry has reached 20 billion yuan and has nearly 5,000 enterprises. The market size is expected to reach 200 billion yuan in the next few years.

Company Dynamics

  1. Royal Friso, an ultra-high-end infant formula brand, has lost partial market share due to a shortage of lactoferrin.

  2. Shareholders of Bellamy (an Australian organic infant and child milk producer) have agreed to a $13.25 a share takeover offer from Mengniu (Chinese dairy company).

  3. To achieve the target of 8 billion yuan in revenue in 2019, Ausnutria raised the price of its core products Kabrita (悦白&悠装) series by 9% to 10%, translating to an increase of 40 yuan per unit.

  4. Junlebao released an A2 infant formula milk powder, which involves end to end management of the product lifecycle and supply chain. 

  5. Yoplait will layout high-end dairy products and formally enter the fresh milk market. It will focus on the first two segments of the market, namely the high-end retail market and the coffee and catering market.

  6. As of Dec. 16, Luckin has 4,910 stores in China, 600 more stores than Starbucks, according to U.S. data firm Thinknum.

  7. New Zealand dairy company Keytone Dairy has registered its second production facility in New Zealand with the China National Certification and Accreditation Administration (CNCA).

  8. On Dec. 16, the Beijing organizing committee of the Winter Olympics announced, Mars has become the official chocolate suppliers for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Winter Paralympics.

Regulatory Compliance

  1. On Dec. 2, 2019, State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) released consultation drafts of the Directory of Raw Materials Used in Nutrient Supplementary Health Food (2019 Edition) and the Directory of Functional Claims Allowed in Nutrient Supplementary Health Food(2019 Edition).

  2. On Dec. 3, 2019, China GAC updated the list of enterprises that have been granted infant formula overseas manufacturer registration approval in China. Five countries, including Ireland, Germany, etc. are involved in the latest updates.

  3. On Dec. 2nd and 9th, 2019, CFSA opened one new food additives (Sucrose Fatty Acid Esters) and seven new FCM additives to public feedback.

  4. On Dec. 9, the State Council Information Office held a press conference introducing the details of "Guidance on Promoting High-Quality Development of Trade."

  5. As revealed by the NHC Notice released on Dec. 13th, 28 new ingredients have passed the safety evaluation and were granted approval (11 new food additives and 17 new FCM additives).

  6. On Dec. 23, Abbott applied to cancel the registration of its liquid infant formula and renewed the registration of one of its milk powder facilities.

  7. On Dec. 23, the Department of Customs of the Chinese Ministry of Finance published the adjustment scheme on 2019 import/export tariffs.

  8. On Dec. 24, 2019, the State Council of China authorized 18 provinces and one autonomous region to establish cross-border e-commerce comprehensive pilot zones in 24 cities.

  9. SAMR has approved two batches of organic infant formula registration, Youcui (优萃, Junlebao) organic formula, and Weizhen (甘肃华羚, Gansu Hualing) organic formula. So far, a total of 21 organic milk powder products have been registered.

  10. The MoA (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Department) of the GAC issued No. 202 Notification, lifting the ban on boneless beef under 30 months of age in Japan.
