Shanghai Consumer Council Raises Doubts About the Market Chaos of Food Added with Hyaluronic Acid

On February 6, 2023, Shanghai Consumer Council (SCC) published an article to cast doubts on the market chaos of foods added with hyaluronic acid (HA, also called sodium hyaluronate), and urge more stringent supervision from regulators, after conducting a special investigation since September of 2022.

[Updated] Taiwan Removes the Use Restrictions of 2′-FL on Infant Formula for Special Medical Purposes

On September 20, 2022, Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) consulted on the amendment to the use restriction of 2′-fucosyllactose (2′-FL) produced by genetically modified Escherichia coli strain K-12 DH1 MDO MAP1001d (hereinafter referred to as “E. coli K-12 MAP1001d”) and genetically modified Escherichia coli strain BL21 (DE3) #1540 (hereinafter referred to as “E. coli BL21 (DE3) #1540”). Any comments on the drafts shall be returned within 60 days since September 20, 2022.

In January of 2023, China consulted on the Standard for the Use of Nutritional Fortification Substances in Foods. South Korea consulted on the Food Additive Code. Japan revised the Enforcement Regulation of the Food Sanitation Act. Philippines proposed to revise regulations on food additives and processing aids. India amended the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives). EU revised the regulation on MRLs for pesticides in or on food and feed of plant and animal origin. US amended the color additive regulations. Canada proposed MRLs for five pesticides in multiple food categories. FSANZ consulted on the energy labelling on alcoholic beverages.

Philippines to Revise Regulations on Food Additives and Processing Aids

On January 19, 2023, Philippines FDA unveiled the draft of Revised Guidelines on Food Additives and Processing Aids, Repealing Administrative Order 88-A s. 1984. The draft was formulated as a replacement of the existing Philippines regulations on food additives and processing aids, and shall apply to all manufacturers, distributors (importer, exporter, and wholesaler), and traders of food products. Comments can be sent to gapascual@fda.gov.ph before February 3, 2023.
