New Food Contact Material Standards Pose Considerable Challenges to China Food Industry

Numerous new standards regulating the safety of food contact material and related products were released by NHFPC in late 2016. The majority of these new standards took effect 19 April 2017. The new standards elevate technical criteria in food inspection and oversight, by further aligning with internationally endorsed testing methodology and working mechanism.

China Infant Formula: New Regulations Reshaping Market Landscape

China’s infant formula market is entering a new age. High-end domestic brands reported three-digit growth in the first quarter of this year while smaller companies are now teetering on the brink of extinction with little prospect of meeting the impending Jan 1st 2018, infant formula registration deadline. In the context of this regulatory reform market behavior has been erratic and unpredictable, already precipitating a chaotic price war which has negatively impacted the performance of some domestic brands evidenced by significant price reductions and share price devaluations.

Taiwan Releases 2016 Border Inspection Failure Data

On Apr. 14, 2017, the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Taiwan released 2016 border inspection report, which reveals that there were 675,000 batches of food and food-related products applied for border inspection in total in 2016. Sampling inspection was carried out for 52,725 batches of food and food-related products, 915 batches of which failed the inspection, accounting for 1.74% of the total amount of sampling inspection.

China Revises Limits of Mycotoxins and Contaminants in Foods

On April 14, 2017, China NHFPC announced the revision of GB 2761-2011 Maximum Levels of Mycotoxins in Foods and GB 2762-2012 Maximum Levels of Contaminants in Foods, which are two major national standards regulating the limits of mycotoxins and contaminants in foods in China. The new versions of these two standards will be formally implemented from Sep. 17, 2017.

China to Revise Labeling Requirements for Prepackaged Foods

GB 7718 National Food Safety Standard General Standard for the Labeling of Prepackaged Foods is the overarching regulation for the standardization of food labeling in China, which is of great importance to domestic enterprises as well as overseas food enterprises. China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment (CFSA) announced on Apr. 12, 2017 that the current 2011 version of GB 7718 will be revised in the near future.

China CFDA Adds New Requirements for Complementary Foods for Infants and Young Children

On Apr. 11, 2017, China CFDA released supplementary requirements for production licensing of complementary foods for infants and young children in accordance with the 2017 version of “Detailed Rules for Production License Examination for Complementary Foods for Infants and Young Children” (see CL news report on Feb. 7, 2017). The production licensing of complementary foods for infants and young children will be strictly regulated by the government.
